One of the most traditional seasonal activities in Madrid is visiting the different Nativity scenes around the city. Most areas in Madrid, as well as towns and villages surrounding the city proper will proudly display their own arrangement. Some of them go the extra mile by setting up special one off life Nativity scenes, with real flesh and blood people posing for the curious at set times and dates.

Conveniently situated for Hotel Sterling, you will find the first Nativity set of the route, the Comunidad de Madrid Nativity or Belén, which is in Puerta del Sol. The Belén is inside the Post Office building,  accessible through the main door in Calle Correos. With over 600 figures this is one of the most visited “belenes” in Madrid.

Not far you will find the next Belén in Iglesia de San Ginés in Calle Arenal 13. It is a Baroque style Belén with real size figures.

The next Belén is situated in Convento de las Carboneras, just behind the Plaza de la Villa in Plaza del Conde de Miranda 3.

Spain has a great tradition of Nativity scenes, and you will also find many stalls selling the traditional figures in the numerous street markets during this season. Just off Puerta del Sol, you can walk a few meters to get to get to Plaza Mayor, where you will be able to buy complements for your own Nativity set back at home.
